Vehicular homicide charge filed in fatal crash in Roosevelt County

ROOSEVELT COUNTY, NM - An additional charge has been filed against the man arrested for a fatal crash in Roosevelt County, according to the Eastern New Mexico News.

31-year-old Fredy Portillo was initially charged with leaving the scene of an accident, abuse of a child and driving without a license.  District Attorney Quentin Ray said he has also now been charged with vehicular homicide.

The crash happened Dec. 3 at the intersection of State Road 267 and South Roosevelt Road V in Portales.  A Chevrolet pickup truck driven by Portillo and a Nissan sport utility vehicle were involved in a head-on collision.   The Nissan driver, 22-year-old Rayleen Vasquez of Santa Rosa, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators later determined that Portillo was driving without headlights and with an open container in his vehicle, prompting the amended charge.
