Transit van and SUV involved in fatal collision in Calhoun County

LEROY TOWNSHIP, MI - A transit van and an SUV were involved in a fatal collision in Leroy Township on Wednesday afternoon, according to Michigan State Police.

A report by WKZO states that the crash occurred in the area of M-66 and B Drive South at about 1:40 p.m.  MSP's investigation determined that a man was driving a Lincoln SUV eastbound and failed to stop at the traffic signal at the intersection.  The SUV crashed into the van as it traveled southbound on M-66.

The driver of the Lincoln, a 71-year-old man from Battle Creek, died in the wreck.  He was not wearing a seat belt, State Police said.  The van driver, a 51-year-old East Leroy man, sustained injuries that were not life-threatening and was transported to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo.

A stretch of M-66 was closed for over three hours while the scene was being cleared and investigated.
