Teenage driver cited for fatal head-on collision on US 550

AZTEC, NM - New Mexico State Police said they have cited a teenage driver believed to have caused a fatal accident in San Juan County last month, according to the Durango Herald.

The wreck occurred Oct. 27 on U.S. Highway 550 north of Aztec at about 11:49 a.m.  NMSP determined that a 17-year-old male was driving a 2019 Ford F-150 Raptor southbound in the highway's northbound lanes and collided head-on with a 2011 Ford F-150.

The driver of the 2011 Ford, 38-year-old Robert Garcia, was killed.   His wife, 38-year-old Catherine Garcia, their 15-year-old daughter and 11-year-old son were injured and taken to University of New Mexico Hospital.  The 17-year-old driver was severely injured and taken to the same hospital.

Investigators said the crash was caused by driver inattention and other improper driving by the driver of the wrong-way 2019 Ford.  That driver, a resident of Hesperus, Colorado, was cited for careless driving and speeding.  State Police said he did not have proof of insurance.  The case will be forwarded to prosecutors for review.
