Pedestrian dies after being hit by Albuquerque sanitation vehicle

ALBUQUERQUE, NM - A man was killed in an accident involving one of Albuqerque's solid waste vehicles on Friday morning, according to police.

KRQE reported details of the incident, which happened at the Alvarado Transit Center at Central Avenue and 1st Street at about 6:15 a.m.   Police said an unhoused man was in the trash compaction compartment of the sanitation truck and tried to climb out as it moved forward. He slipped and fell under the truck and died at the scene. 

The victim's name was not immediately released.  The Albuquerque Police Department and the waste management safety team are investigating the incident, which shut down traffic in the area.
