VILLANUEVA, NM - A rollover accident in San Miguel County Sunday afternoon left one person dead and two others injured, New Mexico State Police said.
State police released details of the incident that occurred on Interstate 25 near mile marker 324 north of Villanueva at about 3:15 p.m.
Investigators determined that the driver of a 2003 Chevrolet truck was headed north on I-25 when the vehicle went off the roadway and rolled, ejecting the driver and front-seat passenger. The passenger, identified as 21-year-old Desiree Apodaca of Las Vegas, New Mexico, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Chevrolet, a 20-year-old male, and the back seat passenger, a 3-year-old child, suffered injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening and were taken to an area hospital.
State police said it appeared that seat belts were not properly utilitized by the driver and front passenger. The accident remains under investigation, and alcohol does not appear to have been a factor.
