PORTALES, NM - A woman entered into a plea deal in connection with a crash in Portales that seriously injured a 12-year-old boy, KRQE reports.
36-year-old Christine Shuman was facing several charges for the March 2022 incident, including leaving the scene of an accident involving injury, careless driving and tampering with evidence. Shuman struck the young boy with her vehicle after he had left a nearby church.
According to police, Shuman had turned her eyes from the road to discipline her two children in the car when she hit the boy, then drove home and hid her car under a tarp.
Under the plea arrangement, Shuman was given the maximum sentence of six months in jail. The victim's family also requested $12,000 in restitution to help with his medical expenses, our Albuquerque car accident attorney adds.
