News: Man sentenced for crash near Laguna Pueblo that left 4 dead

ALBUQUERQUE, NM - A man was sent to prison for a crash in New Mexico that left four people dead, reports KRQE.

50-year-old Alexis Riego of Merritt Island, Florida was sentenced to five years and 10 months behind bars for the accident that occurred Sept. 7, 2019 on Interstate 40.  Riego was driving a commercial vehicle in a construction zone near the Laguna Pueblo when he crashed into a line of cars.  A total of six vehicles were involved in the wreck.  Along with the four people killed, two others were injured.

Riego was speeding and video chatting on his cellphone at the time of the crash, according to prosecutors.

Riego was found guilty by a jury last September of involuntary manslaughter and assault resulting in serious bodily injury.  After his prison term is completed, he will serve three years of supervised release, our Albuquerque car accident attorney adds.
