Man sentenced to prison for deadly DWI accident in Albuquerque

ALBUQUERQUE, NM - A judge has sentenced a man to prison for a fatal drunk driving crash that occurred in Albuquerque in November 2023.

A report by KRQE said that 43-year-old Alex Tafoya was sentenced to seven years behind bars after pleading guilty in October to homicide by vehicle DWI.

Authorities said Tafoya was speeding south on Interstate 25 in a Lexus SUV at about 2 a.m. when he crashed into the back of a Cadillac.  A woman in the Cadillac was killed in the wreck.

New Mexico State Police detained Tafoya after he ran from the scene. They found open containers in his vehicle, and said he appeared to have been impaired.  State Police said he had two previous DWI arrests.
