ALBUQUERQUE, NM - The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of New Mexico announced that a man has been sentenced for a deadly drunk driving crash on the Navajo Nation.
31-year-old Olan Jumbo of Arizona, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, was sentenced to 75 months in prison for involuntary manslaughter and assault resulting in serious bodily injury.
The incident happened on the evening of November 25, 2022. Prosecutors said a couple was driving from Colorado to New Mexico when their sedan broke down. Family members came to assist, and began towing the sedan with their SUV.
As the group traveled on Navajo Route 12, Jumbo was speeding and crashed his truck into the back of the sedan, killing a woman and leaving a man seriously injured. Jumbo fled the scene but was apprehended two days later, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.
Investigators learned that Jumbo had been drinking alcohol while driving, and was traveling between 74-82 miles per hour in a 45 miles per hour zone at the time of the crash. Upon being released from prison, he will be subject to three years of supervised release. There is no parole in the federal system.
