ALBUQUERQUE, NM - A man has pleaded guilty in connection with a crash involving a school bus in Albuquerque on Feb. 23, 2022, according to the Albuquerque Journal.
The incident happened at the intersection of Messina Drive SW and Gibson Boulevard SW. Authorities said 52-year-old Mario Perez was street racing at a high rate of speed in a Ford Mustang and slammed into an Albuquerque Public Schools bus shortly after 4 p.m. The impact caused the bus to flip onto its side and the Mustang to catch fire. Perez, the school bus driver, and two students were among five people hospitalized.
Last week, Perez pleaded guilty to five felony counts of reckless driving resulting in great bodily harm. A witness reported seeing Perez appearing to drive over 110 miles per hour in a 40 miles per hour zone while racing another vehicle before the collision.
As part of the plea agreement, he will face up to 15 years in prison when he is sentenced.
