Driver killed, Santa Fe police officer injured in wrong-way collision

SANTA FE, NM - A collision on Interstate 25 last week left a driver dead and a Santa Fe police officer injured, reports the Santa Fe New Mexican.

New Mexico State Police said the driver of a 2006 Dodge Charger was driving in the wrong direction on I-25 near Santa Ana Pueblo on Jan. 8 shortly before 1:15 a.m.  The Dodge crashed into the southbound vehicle of an off-duty officer who was driving home following a shift.  A supervising officer traveling behind the officer stopped traffic and requested help from law enforcement and fire/EMS crews.

The driver of the Dodge, identified as 67-year-old Roman Moraga, died at the scene.  The police officer was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries that were not life-threatening.

State Police said it is believed that alcohol was a determining factor in the incident.
