PORTER COUNTY, IN - The Porter County Sheriff's Office released details of a vehicle versus train accident that occurred early Thursday morning.
The sheriff's office said the driver of a Dodge Dakota truck was heading south on State Road 149 southeast of Portage at about 5:50 a.m.and collided on the tracks with a CSX train. The vehicle rolled over and caught fire.
The driver of the Dodge was extricated from the truck and taken to an area hospital with serious injuries. No other injuries were reported.
The Porter County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Portage Police Department, Burns Harbor Police Department, and Portage Fire.
The crash shut down State Road 149 between U.S. 20 and U.S. 6 for about five hours. The sheriff's office and CSX Railroad are conducting an investigation into the cause of the incident.
