Collision in Las Cruces leaves driver dead, 2 deputies injured

LAS CRUCES, NM - New Mexico State Police released details of a fatal crash that occurred on Interstate 25 in Las Cruces Monday evening.

NMSP said its investigation indicated that a 57-year-old woman was driving a 2022 Hyundai SUV north on I-15 at about 6:40 p.m. when she turned around in the median and started going southbound.

The Hyundai pulled out in front of a Dona Ana County Sheriff's Deputy vehicle occupied by two deputies that was headed south with its emergency lights and sirens activated.  The deputy vehicle crashed into the back of the Hyundai near milepost 5.

A passenger in the Hyundai, identified as 67-year-old Ismael Misquez, died after being taken to an area hospital.  The Hyundai driver was hospitalized but her condition was not yet known.  The two DASO deputies were taken to an area hospital for treatment.
 
State Police continue to investigate the crash with assistance from the Vehicular Crimes Unit.
