Accident in Fishers claims life of college football player

FISHERS, IN - A car accident in Fishers Saturday night claimed the life of a college football player, according to Fox59.

18-year-old Mason Alexander, a freshman cornerback at the University of Pittsburgh, died in the wreck that occurred in his hometown shortly after 9 p.m.

The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office said Alexander was a passenger in a 2016 BMW heading south on Florida Road. The BMW tried to pass a 2015 Toyota before a hillcrest and swerved to avoid a collision with another car in the northbound lane. The BMW traveled off the road and hit a tree, with the impact causing the car to catch fire.  Alexander died at the scene.  The driver of the Toyota veered off the road and crashed into a mailbox.

Alexander starred at cornerback for Hamilton Southeastern High School in Fishers and was an ESPN 300 recruit in the 2025 class. He signed with Pitt in December, enrolled early and was going to join the team for the start of spring practice this month.

The sheriff's office is continuing to investigate the cause of the crash.

"I received a call this morning that no parent, teacher or coach ever wants to get -- the news of the sudden loss of a young and promising life," Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi said in a statement. "Our entire program is shocked and deeply saddened to learn of Mason Alexander's passing.
