Ambulance and 2 school buses involved in collision in Benton Township

BENTON TOWNSHIP, MI - Two school buses and an ambulance were involved in a collision in Berrien County on Wednesday afternoon, WNDU reports.

Police said the ambulance had its lights and siren on while responding to a call in Benton Harbor at about 1:30 p.m.  As it approached the intersection of M-139 and E. Empire Avenue, the traffic light turned red.

An eastbound Berrien Regional Education Service Agency school bus pulled into the intersection and crashed into the ambulance.  The bus was then pushed into the westbound lanes of Empire Avenue and collided head-on with a First Student bus.

Two paramedics in the ambulance were hospitalized with injuries that were serious but not life-threatening.  An assistant on the first bus, the driver of the second bus and an unknown number of bus assistants suffered minor injuries.

The Berrien County Sheriff's Office is investigating the cause of the accident.
