Alleged drunk driver arrested following fatal wreck in Albuquerque

ALBUQUERQUE, NM - A man is facing multiple criminal charges following a fatal multi-vehicle accident on the west side ofAlbuquerque, reports KRQE.

Police said 21-year-old Jesus Sandoval-Martinez was driving a Dodge Dakota pickup truck at a high rate of speed when he ran a red light at the intersection of Coors Boulevard and Montano Road.  The Dakota crashed into a Tesla and a Toyota Corolla that were both traveling west on Montano Road.

The Tesla driver, 22-year-old Tiger Gutierrez, was pronounced dead after being transported to UNMH.  A passenger in the Tesla was hospitalized in critical condition.  The Toyota driver sustained minor injuries. 

Sandoval-Martinez allegedly fled the scene on foot but was restrained by witnesses and bystanders until police office arrived.  He was taken to UNMH, where a police officer determined that he was impaired.

He was charged with two counts of vehicular homicide (DWI), leaving the scene of an accident (great bodily harm or death), reckless driving, and failure to obey traffic control devices/signs.
