Albuquerque man sentenced for drunk driving crash on US 550

SANTA ANA COUNTY, NM - A man will be heading to prison in connection with a drunk driving crash that occurred in New Mexico on December 1, 2021.

According to the Rio Rancho Observer, 29-year-old Lionel Medina of Albuquerque and the Zia Pueblo was sentenced to three years behind bars for the incident on US 550 on Santa Ana Pueblo land.    He faced a possible ten-year sentence.

Investigators said that Medina's pickup truck reportedly rear-ended an SUV in the eastbound lane of US 550 lane, and that he left the scene.  Minutes later the pickup truck collided head-on with a sedan in the westbound lane of the highway.  Medina was found in the driver's seat of the pickup smellng of alcohol and with multiple alcohol containers in the vehicle.  His blood alcohol content measured several hours after the crash was 0.22, nearly three times the legal limit.

A victim of the crash who was not identified suffered extensive injuries.
